Being able to store your kayak is just important as learning how to use it. If you intend to buy a kayak, or you already have one, then you are going to need to think about where you are going to store it. This will need to be in a safe and convenient location that has sufficient space to do so.
It isn’t ideal to keep a big kayak in your living room, so finding the best possible storage solution is really important, especially if you do not have much space available to you. One of the most important things to consider, is how you are going to do it.
The method that we are going to teach you in this article is how to hang your kayak. Thankfully, this process isn’t too difficult when you have some helpful steps to follow, and this is exactly what we are going to provide you with. To find out more about how to hang a kayak, just keep reading.
Where to Store Your Kayak
The first thing that you will need to think about is where you are going to store your kayak. You will need to find a space that is big enough, and measuring the area where you want to store your kayak is the best place to start. This way, you will know for sure if your kayak is going to fit in the desired space.
The best place to store your kayak is indoors, as it will be better protected. If you have an area like a garage, basement, or other indoor storage area, then these spaces will be perfect.
You should only ever store your kayak outdoors if you have no other options. If you know that you are going to be storing your kayak for a long time, then you could consider having it professionally stored.
Storage Area Temperatures
You will also need to make sure that the temperature of the storage area is suitable. You shouldn’t store your kayak in extremely hot or cold temperatures as this can lead to unwanted damage.
Not only that, but you also shouldn’t store your kayak in direct sunlight, as the heat can warp the plastic and fade the surface.
Cover Your Kayak
No matter if you are storing your kayak indoors or outdoors, it is always best to use a cover to better protect the kayak.
A cover can work to protect your kayak from the weather and elements outside, and dust and insects inside. Your kayak may have already come with a cover, or you can purchase one separately. Failing this, you could use tarp to create your own kayak cover.
How to Hang a Kayak
Now that you know how to prepare for storing your kayak, it is time to get started. The first thing that you will need to do is purchase a hanger that will fit in the area where you want to store the kayak. Some of the best hangers that you can get are those that will mount onto the wall and these are the ones that we recommend for this process.
You can also get your hands on a ceiling hanger if you want to suspend it in the air. Make sure that you get the right hanger for the type of wall surface that you will be using.
You will need to measure the length of the kayak before you start as they all come in different sizes. You should find out where the watertight bulkheads are on your kayak. They are usually around ¼ of the way from either end and in the center. Find out the distance between them, and plan to install the mounts near the bulkheads.
The middle of the kayak is the heaviest, so using the placement of the bulkheads for hanging will allow the hanger to better support the weight of the kayak. The next thing that you need to do is mark the position of the hangers on the wall. Use your measurements to mark your hanger placements on the wall and make sure that they are positioned correctly before you go ahead and install them.
The next step is to screw the mounts to the wall. Line the mounts up with your measurements and go ahead and screw them into place. Once all of your mounts are in place, you can fit the kayak on top of them.
If there are any straps that came with your wall mounts you should fasten them to hold the kayak in place. The straps will usually hook onto metal rings on the ends of the mount.
Protecting Your Kayak from Theft
The last thing that you want is to go through all of this hard work and effort only for your kayak to be stolen. This is why it is really important to take the necessary steps to protect your kayak from theft.
This is especially important if you are planning to store your kayak for a long period of time, like throughout winter, as this is when it is more unlikely for you to check on your kayak regularly.
Make sure that the storage area that you have chosen can be locked. If it can’t, then you will need to install a lock to make sure that you are able to secure the area.
Otherwise, you may be inviting thieves in to steal your things. Try to keep your kayak out of sight for any eyes that might be peeping in. More often than not, thieves will target areas where they know there are great finds, so try to keep your kayak out of sight from windows, or keep the window covered.
If you want to take your kayak security one step further, you could invest in a locking cable. If you didn't already know, a locking cable is almost impenetrable, and you can use it to secure your kayak. If you are using one of these cables, make sure it is secured to something solid.
