Ram Ball Wedge Mounts - New Kayak Fishing Product

March 21, 2008 on 6:24 pm | In New Kayak Fishing Gear | No Comments

Ram is coming out SOON with a new product we think a lot of people will be interested in.  It is the Ram Ball Wedge Mount.  It will come in both a 1 1/2″ ball size and a 1″ ball size. This description is taken off the RAM website:

“Keeping things simple and versatile, the new RAM Ball Wedge Mounts are a great way to provide a mounting point to practically anything.  Simply slide the wedge into the round opening of your sail port (on a Hobie) or rod holder base (such as a Scotty base) and tighten the screw.  The new RAM Ball Wedge Base expands to accomodate holes from 7/8″ - 1″ diameter and locks in tight.  Once installed, you have the perfect way to mount anything RAM.  Rod holders, a GPS or Cell Phone, Cup Holder, Fish Finder, or Flash Light can all be supported and perfectly positioned using this great new product.  No drilling required and only a single tool needed for installation.  This product is one of the best accessories out there for Kayaks and other watercraft.”

The release date is noted as March 24th and we will keep you updated on when the new Wedge Mounts are available.

Fishing Kayak - Tarpon 120 Ultralite

March 17, 2008 on 9:08 pm | In Kayaks | No Comments

John with Southwind Kayaks in Irvine came by with the Tarpon 120 Ultralite and we took the opportunity to take a few pictures of the boat.  I understand from what I’ve read that it weighs 45 pounds compared to the non-Ultralite Tarpon 120 that weighs 60 lbs.  It looks like it will have a good glide and be a good addition to the Tarpon family of boats.  If you have any experience with this boat and would like to add a comment, please do!

New Kayak Fishing Gear Product

Soon to come - Scotty Mini Rod Holder Extender.  We just got a sample of this product and will have an estimated arrival date soon - we’ll let you know when we find out.  This is a shortened version of the stainless steel Rod Holder Extender - but no stainless steel, all plastic.  This extends your rod holder height by 4 1/2″.  Total length seen in the picture is about 6″.

Scotty has also come out with LOCKING mounts - the #241 Mounting Bracket and the #244 Flush Mounting Bracket.  We will have both of these in stock in about a week.  No more inserting your Scotty product in the mount, turning and pushing down to lock in.  With the new locking mounts, all you do is push the product into the mount and it locks in.  The Flush Mounting Bracket may work a bit different, but the same concept.  The #241 has a button for release as does the #244.  You can see both of these on the Scotty Website - www.Scotty.com

New Kayak for Fishing - X-13

March 13, 2008 on 2:07 am | In Kayaks | 5 Comments

 Malibu Kayak X-13

We were at the Fred Hall Fishing Show in Long Beach, California this weekend and got a look at Malibu Kayak’s newest kayak.  It is called the X-13 for the 13′ 10″ kayak.  It looks a lot like the Ocean Kayak Prowler 13 with some unique features.  The front hatch has a scupper hole and is divided from the rest of the kayak.  This area would make a great fish hold.

Malibu Kayak X-13

Malibu X-13 Front Hatch

It has a standard rectangular nut hatch which gives you ample room to stow tackle and shorter rods (since the front hatch is sealed).  The front hatch has a flat round area that can be cut for a 4″ or maybe 6″ deck plate.  See pictures above.   The boat has a good size tank well and also has a 6″ hatch in the rear area to install a rudder.

The bottom  has 2 channels running almost the full length of the kayak in which the 6 scuppers, 3 on each side, are located just like the bottom of some of the Wilderness Systems kayaks. By doing this it will add strength to the bottom which means less flex and better glide. Malibu has taken a little of this and a little of that and some new thinking to make what looks like a great kayak.  Just wait till someone makes a 15′ or 16′ fishing kayak with this kind of thinking. Now that will be cool.

Overall, this boat looks fast, dry, and stable with ample room for tackle.

Malibu Kayaks donated this kayak to raise money (through a raffle) for the Kayak Fishing Association of California which is joining forces with other associations to protect fishing areas along the coastline of California.  The MLPA (Marine Life Protection Act) which was signed into law some time ago, wants to close many areas along the coast line to all fishing.  Visit the KFACA’s website : www.kfaca.org
