Silent Traction System – STS

The Silent Traction System does exactly what its name says.  It provides a sound dampener as well as added traction anywhere you want it on your kayak.  The self adhesive system is easy for any DIYer to install on most boats (more on that soon).

I have it on (2) Jackson Coosas, (1) Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120, (1) Wilderness Systems Tarpon 160, (2) Hobie Pro Anglers, and (1) Hobie Revolution 13. It’s been on the Hobie Pro Anglers, and both Wilderness Systems for around 1yr 3 months it has held up outstanding, no issues what so ever. I first won the product over on Kayak Bass Fishing Christmas in July Drawing.

Now on the Jackson Coosas have been outfitted with it for 8 or 9 months. Right away I noticed it being difficult to apply it just wasn’t sticking very well. We were trying to apply the STS while in the party room in the basement at temps of 50-55 deg, I called Chris Stewart telling him I thought I got a bad batch and told him what and where I was trying to apply it. He said that the adhesive goes dormant around 60/65deg, but once it is applied above the 60/65deg mark it’s there to stay. So naturally we brought the kayaks up to the 72 degree living room.  We let the kayaks sit in there for a day to fully reach the correct temps, and cut all of our tooling so we would have patterns to go by. We got everything cut out and started applying the STS, and it was sticking ok, but not good. I called Chris again and he was very helpful not knowing what was wrong. I thought trouble with the material, so I went downstairs and put a piece on another kayak and it stuck really well. We went a head and applied all the STS to the Coosas, and just worked it over the best we could. Now 8 or 9 months have passed and we have later found out that the Jackson Factory puts some sort of wax on their boats at the factory, and this makes it difficult for the STS  to stick. The STS is still on our kayaks but some of it has come off, and some of the corners are coming up. I have since found out if you wash your Coosa a couple times, and rough up the area where you want to apply the STS with some 100-240 grit sandpaper the STS will stick much better. I’m going to re-apply when I scrounge up $300 or so to buy some more.
Finished product after getting the Coosa's warmed up.
Fully outfitted Jackson Coosa with STS.

Overall it’s a great product, and works on most anything not only kayaks. It holds up very well, and sticks to most any surface.  Shoot I use it on my locker at work so it doesn’t make a lot of noise when shutting the door. Sticks to almost any kayak surface well besides the Jackson because the wax, but if you remove that film with very fine sandpaper and washing, it will stick just as well as it does to the other brands.

It’s been brought to my attention that Native use wax on their boats also.

STS is the best, I’ve seen people use drawer liners, and other materials, but nothing holds up as well as STS. I even use it on my Yakima Bars, and tailgate extender.
If you can draw it and follow lines with scissors you can make any design.
